Thousands of teachers around the world do not get the necessary training and support, and as a consequence pupils do not reach their full potential. VSO is working to change this, and for this, we need Primary Teachers and/or Teacher Trainers. Our Education projects and their objectives vary, you may work in a Teacher Training College, an Education Development Centre, or Ministry of Education, for example.
As a VSO volunteer, you will immerse yourself in a new culture, face fresh challenges and develop your expertise, and often also management skills while doing something truly fulfilling. The local office or partner’s need will decide your exact job description.
The main purpose of this placement is to design and deliver programs which could enable the capacity of partner and primary actors to respond to emergency situations. The project is aimed at improving the resilience capacity of pastoralist communities in the project location through different innovative interventions. VSO is working to change this, and for this, we need Education in Emergencies Specialists.
The volunteer is expected to build the capacity of the education cluster to respond as per the Country Humanitarian and Disaster Resilience Plan so as to ensure the inclusion of Out of School Children in conflict and drought affected locations of the country.
Besides, the project is expected to design and deliver short term teacher training in selected locations of the region on psycho-social skills and Child friendly methodology for teachers from crisis affected areas; empowering teachers and education officers so that they can provide better support to children under the conflict situation to stay in school and achieve better in their education.
Skills, qualifications and experience
- Bachelor Degree in education in emergencies, educational planning and management.
- Proven knowledge and experience in projects related to Disaster Resilience, child-centered and active learning methodologies.
- Good experience in project management, design, teacher training and materials development, preferably masters level.
- Demonstrated experience in education at Pre-primary and Primary level.
- Practical understanding of children and teachers’ needs in areas of basic education.
- Evidenced skills, experience and qualification in psycho-social skills and child-friendly methods.
Besides these skills, you need to be open-minded, respectful, resilient and adaptive to new situations. It is important that you can facilitate positive change, build sustainable working relationships and are willing to seek and share knowledge.
Terms & conditions
VSO will cover and support you in all preparations: training, visa, work permit, registration in-country, flights, vaccinations, anti-malarial treatment, PEP treatment, medical and security clearance. In-country VSO will provide induction and support in placement, arrange secure accommodation (often shared with another VSO professional), full medical insurance (including repatriation cover), medical indemnity insurance, work-related travel costs and a living allowance which will enable you to live a basic but healthy lifestyle, but which is not sufficient to cover ongoing commitments at home.

The experience of a placement is a one-of-a-life-time experience and will benefit you in multiple ways. You will have the chance to learn to work with people from different cultural backgrounds.
