VSO health programs target the whole continuum of care from adolescence, pregnancy and newborn care. We focus on the most vulnerable people, who have limited access to care through lack of information or resources and who face physical or cultural barriers to access quality SRH and obstetric services.

As a VSO volunteer, you will immerse yourself in a new culture, face fresh challenges and develop your expertise, and often also management skills while doing something truly fulfilling. The local office or partner’s need will decide your exact job description.

Role overview

You will be working in a district hospital in a clinical role providing direct patient care, working alongside local specialists, midwives and other health professionals. While doing so you will work towards sustainable development. The overall objective of your input is to work in collaboration with the Hospital, District Health Office (DHO), Regional Health Management Team (RHMT) and other partners to strengthen gynaecological and obstetric services in targeted health facilities.

  • Specific objectives could be:
    Deliver quality health care services in emergency obstetrics and support local health staff in the delivery of services
  • Build the capacity of medical officers, health workers and clinical leads in essential and emergency maternal obstetrics care through training, job coaching, mentoring and support supervision
  • Train doctors (MDs) and Assistant Medical Officers (AMO) and nurse anaesthetists in surgical interventions and abnormalities of labour such as abdominal and vaginal hysterectomy, induced labour, abnormal and caesarean delivery, breech presentation, forceps delivery, twin’s delivery, antepartum hemorrhage, placenta praevia, pre-eclampsia and eclampsia
  • Support development/adaptation and implementation of manuals and protocols/SOPs to strengthen management and functioning of the maternity and labour ward and theatre
  • Strengthen communication and coordination between paediatric and obstetric departments
  • Conduct and strengthen support supervision to district and lower-level health facilities (Health Centres and Dispensaries) on Maternal Health Care
  • Support Health Centre staff in management of the facility, reporting and referral guidelines
  • Plan and organize MNH outreach services with the help of care workers and DHMTs
  • Provide technical capacity-building support to health workers in the use of ultrasound scans/V-scan technology (applicable for Sierra Leone)
  • Improve team working in the unit and across disciplines by acting as a role model, conducting team building and learning events, encouraging an atmosphere where learning and self- reflection is valued and appreciated. Improve learning opportunities for staff and students, e.g. through mentor training, train-the-trainer and engaging with local education partners (health colleges, universities)
  • Support the monitoring and evaluation of maternal services including maternal review and maternal mortality audit meetings
  • Act as a technical advisor for the VSO Health programme team and (with other VSO volunteers) take joint responsibility to maintain and improve the partner relationship and work towards the wider objectives of the Health project you are taking part in

Essential skills, qualifications and experience

  • Medical degree with specialization in Obstetrics/Gynaecology
  • A minimum of 2 years of post-qualification work experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • You are fully accredited in your home country
  • You have the ability to work with limited technical resources
  • Experience in training, coaching and supervision

Besides these skills, you need to be openminded, respectful, resilient and adaptive to new situations. It is important that you can facilitate positive change, build sustainable working relationships and are willing to seek and share knowledge.

Terms & conditions

VSO will cover and support you in all preparations: training, visa, work permit, registration in-country, flights, vaccinations, anti-malarial treatment, PEP treatment, medical and security clearance. In-country VSO will provide induction and support in placement, arrange secure accommodation (often shared with another VSO professional), full medical insurance (including repatriation cover), medical indemnity insurance, work-related travel costs and a living allowance which will enable you to live a basic but healthy lifestyle, but which is not sufficient to cover ongoing commitments at home.
