Empowering a New Generation of Adolescent Girls with Education (ENGAGE)

In the Terai region, we’re supporting 2,660 marginalized and out-of-school girls – especially those living with a disability – to benefit from quality education, develop the skills they need to earn a decent living, and become empowered to control their own sexual and reproductive health. Our ENGAGE project is addressing socio-cultural norms that don’t prioritize girls’ education, raising awareness of the support available for girls with disabilities, and building the skills and capacity of 100 practicing teachers and 90 student teachers through training and ongoing mentoring.

We’re adapting the pioneering peer mentoring approach of our Sisters for Sisters project, so encouraging younger girls’ participation and developing their self-confidence, whilst supporting them to rejoin formal education via nine-month ‘bridge’ classes.

Role overview

In the role of Disability & Inclusion Adviser, you will support implementing partners including local education providers and community leaders in integrating and implementing inclusive education practices for children with disabilities. You will ensure the accessibility of quality education for girls with disabilities aged 6-19 years, who are out of school and excluded from the Educational opportunities. Next to this, you provide technical
and professional support to the partner’s project team and develop the capacity of schoolteachers with a specific focus on disability.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria (must have to be able to carry out the role successfully):

  • A minimum of a bachelor level University degree in disability studies or Special Need education or inclusive education and/or related areas;
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in service and/or pre-service teacher training at
    pre-primary and primary education level with special focus on disability and inclusion;
  • Experience of training teachers at pre-primary and primary level and/or secondary level and
    proven knowledge and skills in Active learning, child-centered and inclusive methodologies and special needs education;
  • Fluent in English and motivated to learn;
  • Proven experience and Knowledge of developing, implementing and coordinating inclusive education projects/programs;
  • Advisory, communication and networking skills and experiences;
  • Experience in developing inclusive education training materials (including teaching aids) and
    in delivering training for children with disabilities (visual impairment, hearing impairment, and physical disabilities.
  • Proven and practical knowledge of peer-to-peer support to share experience and
    learning;
  • Have enthusiasm and the adequate knowledge and experience to continuously monitor, write and evaluate project results and reports on a quarterly and annual basis;
  • Good interpersonal skills combined with a flexible and adaptable attitude;
  • Excellent communication skills with good command of both spoken and written
  • Experience in using the technology to ensure effective management of information systems, planning, and decision making.

Desirable Criteria: 

  • Knowledge and experience in working both at the grassroots and strategic level;
  • Willingness to share his/her skills with colleagues in a professional but sensitive manner
  • Previous experiences of working as VSO in the field of disability and inclusion mainly material development, teacher training would be an asset.

Besides these skills, you need to be openminded, respectful, resilient and adaptive to new situations. It is important that you can facilitate positive change, build sustainable working relationships and are willing to seek and share knowledge.

The experience of a placement is a one-of-a-life-time experience and will benefit you in multiple ways. You will have the chance to learn to work with people from different cultural backgrounds. VSO will cover and support you in all preparations: training, visa, work permit, registration in-country, flights, vaccinations, anti-malarial treatment, PEP treatment, medical and security clearance. In-country VSO will provide induction and support in placement, arrange secure accommodation (often shared with another VSO professional), full medical insurance (including repatriation cover), medical indemnity insurance, work-related travel costs and a living allowance which will enable you to live a basic but healthy lifestyle, but which is not sufficient to cover ongoing commitments at home.

What we do at VSO

Our programs focus on the areas of health, education and livelihoods, with an increasing emphasis on resilience building, social accountability, gender and social inclusion. We believe progress is only possible when we work together and that strong partnerships are crucial to delivering positive change. That’s why we work with over 500 partner organizations, from local and national governments to businesses, NGOs, funders, charities and community groups. Currently, over 30% of our people are recruited from within the country in which they work, and we continue to grow the share of community and national volunteers involved in our programs. We also send increasing numbers of volunteers from one developing country to another. However, our vision has remained the same; to build a world without poverty.

Coronavirus/COVID19

The world currently faces challenges on a scale not seen in a century. As a global organization, efforts to control COVID-19 will certainly result in changes to VSO’s activities and operations in the coming months. At this moment we are not sending international professional volunteers abroad. We have dedicated teams monitoring the situation, working across locations, programmes and projects to ensure we respond appropriately and responsibly – and that no one is left behind. We’ll continue to recruit professional volunteers and maintain a talent pool, to be prepared to work with them in the face of this uncertainty to plan for the future and build a fair world for everyone.
